PANDASIA’s field animal sampling makes headway in laboratory analysis.
In July 2024, the PANDASIA project made significant progress in fieldwork and laboratory analysis. To comprehend the dynamics of zoonotic diseases, Dr. Boripat Siriaroonrat’s Work Package 2 (WP2) collected animal samples during the wet season. These samples were promptly transported to the Work Package 3 (WP3) laboratory at the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, where Prof. Chamsai Pientong, WP3 lead, and her team initiated a comprehensive processing protocol. The laboratory team meticulously handled and analyzed the samples, ensuring accuracy and quality. Integrating field research with advanced lab techniques would provide valuable insights into the complex factors that drive zoonotic spillover events. The laboratory analysis results will inform the development of targeted interventions to mitigate the risk of future pandemics, ultimately safeguarding public health in Southeast Asia and beyond. Prof. Dr. Chamsai Pientong emphasized the need for constant preparedness and mandated immediate updates of processing results to ensure timely cross-checking with WP2 to ensure the quality and validity of the data collected.
